Safety of Metrodome is questioned, The Vikings will still be playing there

A Minnesota Vikings executive said on Friday that the team is worried about the safety of the Metrodome after a blizzard caused the building's roof to collapse, but he kept the team playing there next season.

The Vikings have long aimed for a new stadium paid for mostly by taxpayers, and next year is the final year of their lease on the dome. Vice President Lester Bagley didn't directly address that issue in discussing the outlook for next season.
"We're going to have to dig into that and get an honest assessment of that," Bagley said. "Some people would say, 'Well, a couple of shingles come off the roof you don't build a new barn.' Well, the roof collapsed. We have concerns about the safety of the dome going forward."

Minnesota is dealing with a state budget deficit of more than $6.2 billion that has to be handled first, but Gov. Mark Dayton and legislative leaders have said they're open to a good stadium plan. A state lawmaker plans to introduce a proposal by late January.

Bagley said the Vikings are focused on Monday night's game with the Chicago Bears at the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium. The game will mark a return to outdoor football in Minnesota after the Vikings spent the past 29 years in the dome.

"It's all hands on deck. We've got to get this game off," Bagley said. "The point is it's going to be a great game on 'Monday Night Football.' "

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Friday that the game is on track to be played at TCF Bank Stadium, and there are no plans to move it elsewhere despite major logistical issues.

Also Friday, Minnesota's Percy Harvin said he'll "definitely" play against Chicago. The wide receiver and kickoff returner has missed the last two games because of another episode with migraine headaches, but Harvin was back at practice Thursday and said Friday that he's feeling better.

l JETS: Coach Rex Ryan reiterated that he knew nothing about the wall of players that was formed on the sideline last Sunday against Miami, during which an assistant coach tripped a Dolphins player.

"The facts are the facts," Ryan said. "I never knew, so it's easy to stand up here and tell you that. I'm not a guy that lies about anything. I'm just speaking the truth. If that amazes people, it amazes people."

Ryan also responded to comments made by Brian Billick, with whom he coached in Baltimore. Billick told ESPN Radio that "of course Rex knew about this."

"I wish he would have asked me," Ryan said. "I would have told him the truth. I think he made an assumption there. But he's wrong."

The Jets also announced defensive lineman Trevor Pryce will not play at Pittsburgh on Sunday because of an injured hip. Pryce did not practice all week after suffering the injury against Miami.

l PACKERS: Green Bay listed quarterback Aaron Rodgers as doubtful to play Sunday night at New England, a week after he suffered his second concussion of the season. Coach Mike McCarthy, however, said Friday the door is open for Rodgers to play. He is hoping to make a decision on the starter by Saturday.

l RAVENS: Tight end Todd Heap (pulled hamstring) and safety Tom Zbikowski (back) have been ruled out of Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints because of injuries. Also, running backs Le'Ron McClain and Willis McGahee missed Friday's practice because of the flu and are questionable.

l EAGLES: Philadelphia listed Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel (knee) and Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson (toe) as questionable for Sunday's NFC East showdown at the New York Giants. But after going through Friday's indoor practice, both are expected to participate in the battle for first place.

l GIANTS: Two-time Pro Bowl center Shaun O'Hara appears likely to return Sunday for New York. O'Hara practiced on a limited basis Thursday and Friday and sounded confident that he would play for the first time since being sidelined with a sprained right foot six games ago.

Also Friday, the NFL announced it had fined defensive end Osi Umenyiora $12,500 for roughing Minnesota quarterback Tarvaris Jackson late in the fourth quarter of New York's win over the Vikings on Monday night. The league said Umenyiora unnecessarily struck the quarterback in the head and neck area.

l STEELERS: Safety Troy Polamalu missed practice for a third consecutive day because of a strained right Achilles' tendon and a sore calf and is likely to miss Sunday's game against the Jets. Polamalu apparently aggravated the injury during his 45-yard interception return touchdown against the Bengals on Sunday.

l CHIEFS: A doctor will be at Matt Cassel's side in St. Louis on Sunday to provide final advice on whether Kansas City's quarterback should play 11 days after an emergency appendectomy.

Coach Todd Haley said Cassel's availability for the Rams game remained uncertain Friday. Cassel was limited in practice and officially listed as questionable.

l JAGUARS: Jacksonville re-signed veteran quarterback Todd Bouman on Friday, the same day they listed starter David Garrard as questionable for Sunday's critical game at Indianapolis. Garrard tweaked his hamstring in practice Thursday and was limited in practice Friday.

Coach Jack Del Rio also ruled out two defensive starters, linebacker Justin Durant (groin) and safety Courtney Greene (shoulder), for the game.
